Melvin Lee Kilgore

JASPER — Melvin Loyd Kilgore, 91, died Monday, May 20, 2019, in a Chattanooga health care center. The son of the late Melvin and Ella Mae Locke Kilgore, he was a graduate of Bridgeport High School and Carson-Newman College. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and was a lifelong Baptist, having taught Sunday School for many years. He owned and operated Midway Dry Cleaners in Richard City, Tenn., for several years before beginning his career with the U.S. Postal Service. Prior to his retirement, he had served as Postmaster at both the Richard City and South Pittsburg Post Offices for many years. He was also an avid University of Tennessee football and basketball fan and an avid Atlanta Braves fan. Melvin Loyd had a huge, generous heart and had quietly helped many people through the years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his twin brother, Donald Boyd Kilgore, brother-in-law, Raymond Vinson, and nephews, Dr. Randall Vinson and Greg Estep. He is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Betty Sue Graham Kilgore; sister, Imogene Kilgore Vinson; brother, Dr. Joe Kyle (Patsy) Kilgore, Sr.; nieces and nephews, Sharon Kellermann, Rosa Vinson, Bobby (Kathy) Vinson, Libba Estep (fiancé, Marc Carter), Joe K. (Carroll) Kilgore II, and Kayla (Dana) Morrison; great-nieces and great-nephews, Lindy, Kyle, Stuart, Mark, Rob, Ryan, Jackson, Graham, Joe Kyle III, Adam, Andy, and Katelyn; several great-great-nieces and nephews; several other family members and friends. Funeral services will be conducted from the Jasper Chapel of Rogers Funeral Home at 4 p.m. Central time on Wednesday, May 22, 2019. Interment will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends for visitation on Wednesday from 2 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.
