Mildred Hooper Dixon, 89, of Chattanooga, surrounded by her family, passed into the presence of her Savior and Lord on Friday, Sept. 3, 2010.Mildred was predeceased by her parents, Sim and Ethel Varnell Hooper.She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Howard Dixon. Also a cousin, Marilyn Newman; nieces, Mary (Eddie) Low, Joyce Case Ingle, Barbara (Jack) Wilson, Gayle (Bob) Kelley; nephew, Robert (Sue Robinson) Martin; sister-in-law, Evelyn Martin; several great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.Mildred loved life, her Lord, her family, friends and the service she gave to the six churches she served. She was active as a Sunday School Teacher, choir member and frequently sang duets with her husband. She also served as president of Womens Missionary Organization, director of Baptist Training Union and part-time secretary.She was a 1939 graduate of Central High School, and, interestingly, was asked to serve as an honorary member of her husbands City High Schools class of 1940 Reunion Planning Committee which she did for 34 years.Camping was a primary fun type activity and she and Howard were 35 year members of the Wally Bynum Airstream Club. Such travel took them to many parts of the U.S. and Canada. Long periods of activity also were enjoyed at the Land Yacht Port of Call facility of Melbourne, Fla.Mildred loved home life with her husband. As a result of her husbands frequent job transfers, Mildred, as a very outgoing person, was privileged to enjoy meeting many people in the places they resided. She cultivated many friends and acquaintances, many of whom she remained in close touch. Until about three years ago, Mildred was active in Brainerd Baptist Church as a ladies Adult Sunday School Class teacher which she thoroughly enjoyed.The family would like to thank Memorial Hospital and Chattanooga Hospice for their loving care and support and also to all who encouraged us, prayed for and stood by us during this time.Memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund of Brainerd Baptist Church, Hospice of Chattanooga or to a favorite charity.Please visit www.heritagefh.com to share words of comfort to the family.Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 5, 2010, at Brainerd Baptist Church with the Rev. Chris Moses officiating.Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.Pallbearers will be Eddie Bingham, Howard Gentry, Joe Miller, Bill Pryor, George Stanley and Bill Young.Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Love Bible Class.The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home, 7454 East Brainerd Road, Chattanooga.
