Silas Williams Jr. passed away on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011.He was born Jan. 21, 1923, to Elizabeth Lodor Williams and Silas Williams at Grey Rocks, Cravens Terrace, on the side of Lookout Mountain.Mr. Williams was married for 50 years to Marilyn Miller Williams who preceded him in death;, as did his parents; an infant sister; and his first cousins, Dabney James and William Frierson.Mr. Williams lived his life in service to others, including his extensive work through the Episcopal Church and the legal profession in Chattanooga. He was educated at the Bright School and the Baylor School, where he was valedictorian and won all the academic awards. Thereafter, he attended the University of the South at Sewanee, Tenn. His college education was interrupted by World War II and his service in the United States Army. During and after his military service, he continued his education through the University of Missouri and in Vienna, Austria, and obtained his degree from the University of the South at Sewanee. He then attended Duke University Law School. After law school, he returned to Chattanooga and joined the firm of Spears, Moore, Rebman and Williams where he practiced until his retirement.Mr. Williams' personal and professional lives were tributes to his integrity, intellect and selflessness. His graciousness and strong values earned him the respect of his peers and set him apart as an example of professionalism. His astuteness and integrity earned him complete credibility with the bench, bar, and juries, thereby earning him a reputation as a preeminent trial lawyer.Mr. Williams served multiple times on the vestry of St. Pauls Episcopal Church, Chattanooga, as Sunday school superintendent, junior warden, senior warden and lay eucharistic minister and many other positions, as well as assisted Marilyn Williams in her work as chair of the Altar Guild. He served the Diocese of East Tennessee as a vice chancellor and when the diocese divided, assumed the office of chancellor in which he served the diocese for many years. He was a delegate to multiple General Conventions of The Episcopal Church.Mr. Williams was on the founding board of St. Barnabas Nursing Home and served on the board of Hosanna House. He was a member of the Chattanooga Rotary Club and the Georgia Chapter of the Society of the Cincinnati. He was also a member of the Southeastern Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society.Mr. Williams held memberships in the American, Tennessee and Chattanooga Bar Associations, American College of Trial Lawyers, National Association of Railroad Trial Lawyers, Defense Research Institute, Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel and Tennessee Defense Lawyers Association. He was a Fellow of the Tennessee Bar Foundation and the Chattanooga Bar Foundation.Mr. Williams is survived by his brother, James Thomas Williams III; children, Silas Williams III and wife, Meg, Marie Williams Cleary and husband, Jeff, Franklin Miller Williams and wife, Donna, and David Lodor Williams; grandchildren, Taylor Williams, Laura Cleary, Jonathan Cleary, Margaret Dean, Caroline Vale, Miller Williams, Brian Williams and Cecilia Williams; eight great-grandchildren; four nieces and a nephew and their children. Memories of the loving patriarch he was will live in all of them throughout their lives.Mr. Williams was blessed with the care and company of Michelle Pemberton, Tammy Howard, Ginny Mullins and Sharon Smith during the last years of his life. The family thanks them for the comfort they gave him.The family will receive visitors at St. Pauls Episcopal Church beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 16, 2011, followed by the funeral service at 2 p.m. and interment of ashes at the St. Pauls Memorial Garden thereafter.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Marilyn and Silas Williams Fund at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 305 W. Seventh St., Chattanooga, or Hosanna at P.O. Box 958, Hixson.Wann Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
