Betty Jeanne Briscoe Glass, 92, died peacefully Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012, at her home in Chattanooga.Born Sept. 24, 1919 to Walter Cole Briscoe and Abigail McKean Briscoe in Westfield, Ill., she graduated from Purdue University in 1941. On Jan. 23, 1944 she married James M. Glass Jr., whom she met while working as a chemist the Smokeless Powder Plant in Charleston, Ind.She moved to Chattanooga in 1951 and taught chemistry and home economics in the City School System. She was an active member of Northside Presbyterian Church for six decades, serving as teacher, deacon, elder and a longtime participant in the "Quilter's Circle". She held many offices in Presbyterian Women and the Nancy Ward Chapter of the DAR. She was a charter member of the Circle 8s Square Dance Club and volunteered at both Memorial Hospital and Northside Neighborhood House.She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years; and her brother, John W. Briscoe, of Urbana, Ill. She is survived by her son, James M. Glass III, of Huntsville, Ala.; grandchildren Melissa Glass (Matt Robson), of New York City, James (Jenny) Glass IV, of Huntsville, Ala., and Eric Glass, of Menlo Park, Calif.; her twin brother, Robert A. Briscoe, of Fort Collins, Colo.; nephew, Richard Briscoe, of Carmel, Calif.; and nieces, Marce Donovan, of Fort Collins, Colo., and Barbara Briscoe, of Spokane, Wash.Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012, at Northside Presbyterian Church.
