Dorothy Smith, 89, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012.She was born Nov. 18, 1922 in Chattanooga. She had been an active member of Missionary Ridge Baptist Church for many years and was involved in many church activities. Later, she became a member of Second Missionary Baptist Church and was involved in various church activities. She was involved with a number of religious, civic and social organizations and a lifelong member of the Avondale Ladies Guild.She was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Smith Jr.; son, Carlton L. Higginbotham; sisters, Hattie Smith, Leona Foster, Eloise Rowe; and her parents.She is survived by her grandsons, Aaron Scott (Carly) Higginbotham, Carl Jason (Veltrice) Higginbotham, of Raleigh, N.C.; granddaughters, Mollie Higginbotham and Danielle Taylor, of Chattanooga; six great-grandchildren; six nieces, and a host of other relatives and special friends.Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 10, 2012 in the funeral home chapel. Interment: National Cemetery.The body will lie in state after noon today at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 622-9995.
