Ray Coolidge Carter, 89, of Chattanooga, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012 at his residence.Mr. Carter was a member of Temple Baptist Church and the Watts Sunday School Class. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and retired from Redding Railroad. He also served as a police officer with the Philadelphia Police Department and was preceded in death by his parents, William and Amanda Lois Carter; sisters, Martha Owens, Adi-Louise Birchett, Joann Stephenson, Carzell Durham, Virginia King, and Armell Holt; and brothers, David Carter, Paul Harold Carter, Bill Carter, Jr., and Clarence Carter.Survivors include his wife, Martha McDowell Carter; sons and daughters-in-law, James and Debra Carter, Raleigh, N.C., Ray and Jo Ann Carter, Philadelphia, Pa., Randy and Rhonda Carter, Thief River Falls, Minn., and Greg and Carol Carter, Long Island, N.Y.; sister, Barbara Jean Seabolt; brothers, Calvin and John Carter, all of Tellico Plains, Tenn.; eleven grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.Graveside services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 18, at 11:30 a.m. at the Chattanooga National Cemetery with Rev. David Stancil and Rev. Shad Smith officiating.
