Jr.Lon E. Smith Jr., 88 of Huntsville, formerly of Chattanooga, passed away at 6:05 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012.Lon was born and lived most of his life in Chattanooga. He and his wife moved to Huntsville to be closer to family in 2008. As a young man, he was credited as an outstanding baseball player at Chattanooga Central High School with a .543 batting average despite working a full time job to help support his family. After graduating in 1943, he immediately signed to third base with major leagues St. Louis Cardinals. However, his dreams of a major league baseball career were put on indefinite hold when he enlisted in the U.S. Army later that year. Lon served with distinction in the 38th Infantry during WWII in the Central European battle theater achieving decorations and citations including the Combat Infantry Badge, American Theater Service Medal, EAME Service Metal, and the Bronze Star.After the war, Lon returned to Chattanooga and married Helen Frazier Smith of Greensboro, N.C. Lon and Helen were long time active members of First-Centenary United Methodist Church in Chattanooga. He retired from TVA in Chattanooga after 36 years of employment as supervisor of Administration Services, Land Branch. He was widely known by friends and colleagues for his outstanding character and the love he had for his wife and daughter. He was the epitome of a true southern gentleman.Lon is survived by his wife of 66 years, Helen Frazier Smith; daughter, Donna and her husband, Stephen J Epps, of Huntsville; and his grandson, Stephen Nathaniel Epps, of Birmingham, Ala.. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel at the Church of Nativity, 208 Eustis St., Huntsville.A burial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Chattanooga National Cemetery Pavilion, 1200 Bailey Ave., Chattanooga.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association, 117A Longwood Drive SE, Huntsville, AL 35801.
