Gerald Edward Sims died peacefully in his home on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012, after a short and painful battle with Leukemia. Gerald was born April, 15, 1945, he grew up in Chattanooga, Tenn., and graduated from Tyner High School. Gerald served as a Marine in the Vietnam War from 1965-1969. During his tour of duty, he was wounded twice and received two Purple Heart Medals for his sacrifice to our country.Gerald retired from BellSouth with 30 years of service. He began his career as a lineman and retired as Supervisor of Contractors. He was a member of Graceworks Church in Chattanooga, Tenn. He served for the Red Cross and actively aided families in need. His most recent contribution to the community was during the Tornado damage in Apsion, Tenn., and surrounding areas. Gerald actively helped families with damage by cutting trees, bringing in supplies and loaning his RV to those who needed a home.Gerald was an active member of the American Legion, Post 95. He served as Honor Guard and helped lay those who lost their lives for our country to rest.Gerald was a loving father and grandfather. He joins his son, Jason Edward Davis Sims (Jed); his parents, Mary Thelma McClure Sims and John Edward Sims; his brother Charles Lamar Sims; sisters, Karen "Cookie" Sims Meadows and baby, Crystal Sims, in heaven. His survivors include his daughter, Crystal Leigh Sims Walker; son-in-law, Jason E. Walker; grandchildren, Cora-Leigh ONeal and Joshua Christian Alexander ONeal; his nephews, Gary, Glen and Greg Meadows and Charles Lamar Sims (King) and his niece, Brandy Sims.Dr. Dennis Newman and The Rev. Larry Nash will conduct the service on Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 11:30 a.m. in Graceworks Church.Interment will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery, at 1:30 p.m. After burial, friends and family will be welcomed back to Graceworks for food and fellowship.In lieu of flowers, Gerald requested donations to be made to the American Legion, Post 95, 3329 Ringgold Road, East Ridge, TN 37412.Send condolences at www.CovenantFuneral.com.Arrangements are by Covenant Funeral & Cremation Service, Crox family owned and operated.
