James Arthur Pendergrass (also known as Jay, J.A. and Jim) passed away Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012.He was born in Sale Creek on February 16, 1925, eldest son of Ray and Flossie Pendergrass. He graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1943 and briefly attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. James served his country in World War II, stationed primarily in Kingman, Ariz., where, as a Master Sergeant, U.S. Air Force, he serviced and repaired V-29 bomber systems. After returning home from the Air Force, he began a career in the insurance business, from which he retired in 1981. James was an avid reader, a lover of history, a teller of stories and a sometime purveyor of tall tales. He had a firm and unshakeable belief in his Creator and his Redeemer, and was a faithful member of White Oak Baptist Church.He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Virginia Jo Brooks Pendergrass; and a younger brother, Broyles Pendergrass. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Snodgrass Pendergrass; sons, Michael (Dianne) , Chattanooga and Timothy (Ruth), Savannah, Georgia; brother, Claude Pendergrass, Spring City; sister, Marguerite Burt, Soddy-Daisy; stepsons, Gary (Tiffany) Snodgrass and Sonny (Rebecca) Snodgrass.
