William Miller (Bill) Taff, of Lookout Mountain, passed away Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012. He was born in Chattanooga in 1923 to Euda Miller Taff and Otis Drake Taff, Mr. Taff graduated The Baylor School in 1941, and served as its Alumni Association President 1960 and 1976. During World War II, Taff served in the Army and in subsequent years as a reservist as a commissioned Second Lieutenant until 1954.After the war, he enrolled at University of Chattanooga, where he received a B.B.A.Mr. Taff joined his uncle E. Frank Miller at wholesaler Chattanooga Paper and Woodenware Company (CPW) in 1948. As Chattanooga's heavy industry expanded in the post war years, CPW began to utilize its position as a paper and plastics distributor to align its growth with that of the area's industry. Bill served as the firm's first industrial sales representative. He was named CPW president in 1973 and remained in the position until his retirement in 1990. During his professional career Mr. Taff was on Scott Paper Company's Merchant Advisory Board, a board member of Affiliated Paper Companies and Southern Paper Trade Association.Upon marriage to Katharine (Katie) Beach Latimore in 1955 at Lookout Mountain's Church of the Good Shepherd, Mr. Taff joined the congregation, and later served as a Vestryman and Treasurer. The Taff's have called Lookout Mountain home their entire married life. With a group of golf aficionados, he saw the dream of a championship course in the Chattanooga area realized in creation of Ooltewah's The Honors Course. Mr. Taff served as the club's founding president. As a player, he competed as an amateur throughout life, winning championships into his 70s. His love for the game was most notably learned in his sharing numerous hole-in-one experiences. Preceding him in death were Mr. Taff's parents, and his daughter Mary Calloway (Callie) Taff Bishop.He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Katie, of Lookout Mountain; daughter, Grayson Taff, of Kensington, Md.; sons, Stuart Taff, of Seattle and Bayly (Kim) Taff, of Atlanta; son-in-law Bo Bishop, of Lookout Mountain; grand children, Will (Erin) Bishop, of Atlanta, Andy, David and Lizzie Bishop, of Lookout Mountain, Mary Lauren Bishop, of Charlotte, Elise Taff, of New York City and Rachel Taff, of Atlanta; as well as great-grand daughter Katharine Calloway Bishop.Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, at Church of the Good Shepherd Episcopal, Lookout Mountain, TN, the family will receive friends from 3-4 p.m. at the church.The family would like to thank Ken and Sybil Meredith and Diane Camp for the dedication to Bill over the years.
