Doris Brooks Henry Brown, 87, passed away Monday, April 8, 2013.A longtime Chattanoogan, Doris was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church, where she was actively engaged in multiple ministries. She especially enjoyed sponsoring children from Africa.Doris, remembered for her great sense of humor, was a loving and dedicated mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was especially known for her deep and abiding faith. After completing her career in development at UTC, Doris engaged in volunteer service in the Erlanger Neonatal Unit and was a foster grandparent in Special Education at Red Bank Elementary School. Doris often played bridge with a group of several lady friends.Doris was married to Robert Martin "Bob" Brown for 50 years. They loved to square dance together.Bob preceded Doris in death, as did her parents, Robert Lee and Mittie Angeline Brooks Henry; and a sister, Robertine Ophelia Schmidt.Survivors include her daughter, Janice Charissa Brown (Bill) Nelms, of Hixson; a brother, Kim Martin (Stephanie) Brown, Badin, N.C.; grandchildren, William Joshua (Heather) Nelms and Elisabeth "Libby" Derieux Brown; a great-granddaughter, Elena Pearce Nelms; a sister, Frances Henry (Joe) King; and numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the North Chapel.Services for Doris will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday at the North Chapel.Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.The family would like to thank Manorhouse Assisted Living and Hospice of Chattanooga for their dedicated, loving care of Doris.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church (Library Fund), 554 McCallie Ave., Chattanooga, TN 37404.Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory & Florist.
