Jim Walker

Hamilton County

James Atchiles "Abe" Walker, 81, of Chattanooga, died peacefully Tuesday evening July 30, 2013, at The Cumberland in Nashville, Tenn.Mr. Walker was born in a small farmhouse in Ravenscroft, Tenn., on Nov. 2, 1931. He graduated from High School in White County, Tenn., and later received his bachelors degree in Engineering from Tennessee Technology University in 1953. After a brief stint in the U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corp, Jim spent 37 years in the private sector in Engineering design.Jims first love was family. He was an extremely dedicated husband to, the love of his life, Linda, his wife of 55 years. He was a committed father to his three children, Mike, Lisa and Dee and their friends, and, later in life, his granddaughters, Camy and Presley, instilling in them the values he learned as a child. His second love was the outdoors. As a young boy and teenager, he spent most of his time hunting, trapping and fishing the lakes and woods of Tennessee. Using proceeds from his fur trapping and coal mining work, he put himself through engineering school. Even when he spent time in the Armed Forces, he was fortunate to be stationed in the great outdoors of Alaska.Jim was very humble but proud of the many different responsibilities he had throughout his life, such as his work as a nuclear engineer and manager at Combustion Engineering. He often spoke about his dedicated team and all of the success they had in the US and abroad throughout his tenure.Jim was known to many as the "Veteran Outdoorsman" and to a few as "The Great Sourdough Guide." He organized many neighborhood weekend hikes, father-son fishing outings to Tellico, father-daughter fishing outings to the Elk River and family/friends outings to Alaska. He was probably happiest paddling in many week long canoe/camping trips with family and friends down the Buffalo National River in Arkansas.Jim spent his retired life with his Linda traveling as they enjoyed each others company and the company of their granddaughters. Jim was a member at St. John United Methodist Church in Chattanooga.Jim was preceded in death by his father, Atchilies E. Walker and mother Pauline H.
