Adele Bethel Hampton, 88, daughter of the late Edwin Alexander Bethel and Katharine Lasley Bethel, passed away early Sunday morning, Aug. 4, 2013, as a result of complications from Parkinsons disease.Born on Nov. 16, 1924 in Montgomery, Ala., her father was a major in the Army and a graduate of the famed class of 1915 at West Point. The famly lived in Paris for several years in the 1920s where Major Bethel was stationed at the War College. Following his untimely death in 1934, Adele and her mother Katharine moved to Lookout Mountain to live with grandparents, William Lasley and Adele Marshall Lasley.Adele briefly attended Sweetbriar College but graduated from the University of Chattanooga with degrees in chemistry and music. It was there that she met her late husband, Dr. John Cantrell Hampton. They were married in 1949.Adele worked for several years at the Chattanooga Medicine Co. before becoming a full time mother and Civic leader. Her accomplishments include zone chairman of the Garden Club of America, a long time board member of the AIM Center in Chattanooga, and most significantly, a founder and first board President for the Tennessee River Gorge Trust in 1981. The Trust created the Adele Hampton Lifetime Achievement award in her honor in 1995.She is survived by three children, John Bethel Hampton, of Marietta, Ga., William Lasley Hampton, of Durham N,C., and Mary (Al) Hampton Ceren, of Ooltewah; and a grandson, Peter Hampton Ceren.A memorial service will take place Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013 at 4:30 p.m. at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Lookout Mountain with Rev. Robert Childers officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 3:30 p.m. at the Church.The family would like to express their gratitude to Danielle Tate, Stacy Bridges, Tammy Hirschkorn and Jennifer Walls of Amara Healthcare, and to Hospice of Chattanooga.They also request that, in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to Tennessee Rover Gorge Trust, Church of the Good Shepherd, Hospice of Chattanooga or the charity of their choice.Visit to share words of comfort to the family.Arrangements are by Heritage Funeral Home, 7454 East Brainerd Road, Chattanooga, TN 37421.
