Dr. Sr.Dr. Jesse Lee McCants Sr., 77, of Chattanooga, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013, at his residence.He was a veteran of the United States Army and was a member of First Baptist Church E. 8th Street. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., American Diabetes Association, NAACP, Big Brothers Association and the Better Business Bureau of Chattanooga. Dr. McCants served as a board member for the Chattanooga Area Vocational & Technical School, and the Southeast Tennessee Development District. He assisted in organizing the Chattanooga Regional History Museum and volunteered with the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department as a Deputy.He was preceded in death by his father, Gabe McCants Sr.; mother, Rosie Tee McCants; wife, Hettie Jane McCants; brothers, Willie Hayward McCants, Gabe McCants Jr., Willie Roy McCants, and Elijah McCants.Survivors include his sons, Jesse Lee McCants Jr., of Chattanooga and Jerel Lindsay McCants, of Tampa, Fla.; daughters, Sheree Yvonne Joyce, of Nashville, Jacinta Lariece McCants (Darnell) McGavock, and Janella Larose McCants, both of Chattanooga; seven grandchildren, Jessica Lynn McCants, Jada Latrece McCants, Darnell Kevin McGavock Jr., Frederick Douglass McGavock, Jordan Levi McGavock, all of Chattanooga, Jocelin Nicole Joyce and Wesley Franklin Joyce II, both of Nashville; one great-grandchild, QMari Jayden White, of Chattanooga; brother, John McCants, of Sacramento, Calif.; sisters, Rosella Avery, of Valley, Ala., and Mary Elizabeth McKinney, of Grand Rapids, Mich.; aunt, Geneva Carter, of Lanett, Ala.; several nieces, nephews, cousins; other relatives and friends.Visitation is today, Aug. 18, 2013, from 5-7 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Home.Funeral services will be Monday, Aug. 19, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Resurrected Baptist Church with Pastor Eddie Jacks as the eulogist.Burial: Chattanooga National Cemetery.
