Jay Drake

Worthy "Jay" Jayne Drake, of Chattanooga, died on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013 in a local hospital. Jay was born in Kingston, Pa., on May 5, 1930. He lived in Tampa, Fla., as a young child but later returned to Pennsylvania. He graduated from Tunkhannock High School (PA) where he sang and performed in Operettas. He later joined the Air Force and was stationed in El Paso, Texas as well as Biloxi, Mississippi where he studied at the Radar School at Keesler Air Force Base. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant and was awarded a Good Conduct Medal. He later became a Missile Tracking Instructor at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Ala. He went on to work as a Field Engineer for Melpar Cooperation in Watertown, Massachusetts and Northrop Corporation in Groton, Connecticut, working on nuclear submarines. He continued to work in the nuclear field at the Y-12 facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He retired from the Tennessee Valley Authority in 1990 after having worked at the facilities at Browns Ferry, Sequoya, Watts Bar and Bellefonte. He loved antique and stock cars and previously was the owner of a race car in Ledyard, Connecticut. He liked fishing and shrimping and was the previous owner of the Marjorie in Gulfport, Mississippi. He was previously a member of the Civitans in Huntsville, Alabama. He was preceded in death by his father, Lewis Evan Drake; mother, Eda Jayne Drake; brother, John Drake; sisters, Florence Drake, Elizabeth Drake, Beatrice Drake, Josephine Drake Hoyt; and son, Douglas Thomas Eaton. Survivors include a brother, Lewis Drake, of Virginia; children, Susan Drake Van Court (Robert) and Patricia Drake Athanalaos (Jim) all of Gulfport, Mississippi; Phillip L. Eaton (Charleen), of Plymouth, Massachusetts, Richard Eaton, of Nashville, Tenn., Lauralyn V. Drake (Richie Waldon) and Cheryl L. Drake, all of Chattanooga, John J. Drake (Lisa), of Dutton, Ala. He adored his grandchildren, Marci Van Court, Liberty Van Court, Stephanie Van Court, Jessica Drake Boyd, Allison Eaton Flynn, Shawn Drake, Rachel Drake Adams, Matthew Belcher, Heather Drake, Alex Eaton, Victoria Belcher and Jonah Drake. He had nine great-grandchildren and was previously married to Joyce Niolet Drake of DeLisle, Mississippi and Pauline Robinson of Medford, Massachusetts and Harrison, Tenn. A celebration of his life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013 in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in the Chattanooga National Cemetery. The family will receive friends for visitation on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
