SEWANEE Edward McCrady died Friday, Jan. 24, 2013.He was the eldest son of Edward and Edith McCrady, of Sewanee, born Sept. 24, 1933.He was a graduate and trustee of the University of the South and for 31 years a professor of biology at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. He was raised in Sewanee, attending the Sewanee Military Academy and the undergraduate college, and earlydeveloped a lifelong interest in airplanes and aviation. After receiving his bachelors degree, he married Sally Kelso Buck (also of Sewanee). They began their 57-year marriage by service in the U.S. Air Force, for which he piloted B-47 (bombers) in the Strategic Air Command during the cold war. Afterwards, he earned a PhD in biology from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, and began his long teaching career at Greensboro. There, out of the entire faculty, he was distinguished by the Universitys formal designation, "Teacher of the Year," for the excellence and popularity of his instruction. He was co-editor of the 5th edition of Torreys Morphogenesis of the Vertebrates, and edited and published his fathers principal work, Seen And Unseen, a Biologist views the Universe. He was a lay leader in the Diocese of North Carolina and Senior Warden of Saint Francis Church, Greensboro. After retirement in 1995, he and his wife retired to their childhood home, continuing in Sewanee as active members of academic and civic causes. They both sang in the Sewanee Chorale, and he played flute in the Sewanee Orchestra. They served together as co-presidents of the Friends of the Library, and again Presidents of the Friends of the Sewanee Summer Music Festival. He was a director of the towns Utility District, and president of Housing Sewanee, for which he labored directly as a hands-on project manager.He is survived by his wife and their three children, Helen Tucker McCrady (John Barbour), of Boston, Mass., John Stratton McCrady, also of Boston; and Edward de Bernire McCrady, of Dahlonega, Ga.; and also by six grandsons, Justin Edward McCrady, Edward Stratton McCrady, Andrew Errington McCrady, Jason Anthony McCrady, Jared Abee McCrady and Daniel Elliott McCrady.Memorial Service at All Saints Chapel, Sewanee, at 11 a.m. CST Saturday, Feb. 2.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the University of the South: www.sewanee.edu.Arrangements by Moore-Cortner Funeral Home, 300 First Ave. NW, Winchester, Tenn., 931-967-2222 www.moorecortner.com.
