Hamilton County

Mary Stone Smith, 92, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013. She grew up in Biscoe, Ark., and attended Hendrix College in Conway, Ark., where she met Nap Smith whom she married in 1941. During World War II, they were moved to numerous cities across the country. In 1962, after being transferred to Chattanooga, they made it their permanent home.Mary and Nap were longtime active members of Central Presbyterian Church, and when the building was sold, they embraced Northside Presbyterian Church as their church home.Mary, a lifetime "needle artist," founded a needlework business in the 1960s that thrived until she and Nap retired and sold their joint business. Mary was a certified knitting instructor who served as a guild leader and taught a course in Chicago for one of the knitting companies. In 1977, together with Diane Durand, she held a fashion show at the Hunter Museum of Art, "Elegance for the Creative Woman," that demonstrated the value and respect accorded handmade originals at the time. She was depicted from many perspectives in feature stories in The Chattanooga Times over the years: in 1974 as an "Artist with Needle and Thread"; in 1978 in a lengthy article about the combination home and business that she and Nap designed and built: "Living over the Store: Nap and Mary Think That Living over the Store Is an Old Idea Whose Time Has Come Again"; and in 1980 in a series on local businesswomen. Her husband, Nap, was not only her business and life partner, but also her dance, gardening, and bridge partner. Their love of duplicate bridge and their association with the Chattanooga Bridge Club was a major source of enjoyment for them in their retirement. She is survived by three children, Virginia "Tracy" Smith, Kathryn "Kit" Smith Hannon, and Lewis Montgomery "Monty" Smith; as well as two grandsons, a great grandson, a sister, two nephews, a niece, and their children. Her memorial service will be held at Northside Presbyterian Church at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6, 2013, with visitation following the ceremony.
