Helen Harris

Helen C. Harris, 89, of Chattanooga (born in Commerce, Ga.) went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 27, 2014, surrounded by her husband and daughter after a short illness. She accepted Christ at an early age and was a faithful, devoted member of New Zion Missionary Baptist Church for over 60 years, where she served as a Sunday school teacher (Teens and Adult Womens Class), an active member of the Mass Choir and the Golden Harvest Ministry. She was also a former employee of Campbell Clinic and the University of Chattanooga; now UTC for over two decades. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Willie V. King and Chester Barnett; son, Robert Allen; and daughter, Willie Mae Allen. She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband of 60 years, George Harris Jr.; loving and devoted daughter and caretaker, Helen Frances Harris; sons, David L. Harris, St. Louis, Mo.; George Henry Harris; Pastor Chester A. (Sabrina) Harris, Chattanooga and Maurice (Lisa) Harris, Dalton, Ga.; six grandchildren, Terica Harris, Nashville, Nathan Reese, Casi Harris, Michelle Reese, Dominque Harris, Chattanooga, and Aiden Harris, Dalton, Ga.; three great-grandchildren, Kaidan Benton, Nashville, Nashawn Reese and Mia Williams, Chattanooga; brother-in-law, Arthur Harris, Chattanooga; sisters-in-law, Fannie Mae Smith, Macon, Ga. and Bobbie Jean Harris, Chattanooga; a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, 2014 at New Zion Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Robert L. Allen officiating. Interment 10 a.m. Monday, April 7, at National Cemetery. The body will lie in state 1 hour prior to the service at the church. The body will lie in state after noon today and the family will receive friends from 67 p.m. at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 622-9995.
