Charles McCurdy

Charles Edward "Charlie" McCurdy passed away Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013. Son of Oscar and Ruth McCurdy born April 22, 1930, in Chattanooga where he spent most of his life, a life well lived with Joy, Work, Patience and Kindness. He graduated from Central High School where he was on the varsity football team. He then graduated from University of Chattanooga with a bachelor of science degree Cum Laude, was the editor of the College Yearbook, ROTC Cadet, and member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. There he met and soon after graduation married Linda Leslie. Charlie was immediately enlisted in the Army as an active duty officer at Fort Sill Okla., then Fort Benning Ga. During his first year of duty his commander moved him to several different jobs. In his frustration he went to his commander to ask what he was doing wrong. The commander told him "Nothing", it was what he was doing right. He was placed in problem areas and in a short time he would get that area running smoothly so he would be moved to another problem area where he would do the same. After active duty he moved back to Chattanooga where he joined the family business and stayed in the Army Reserves retiring as a Lt. Colonel. Charlie and Linda had three children, Leslie, Keith (daughter), and Tara. He was a wonderful Dad who was always there for his children. He managed one of the most successful and loved small businesses in Chattanooga history, Oscars Sandwich Shop on Highway 58. Oscars was a favorite eating establishment for almost 70 years. He and Linda divorced in 1970. A few years later he fell in love with Helen Ramsey with whom he married and spent the rest of his life. They had a wonderful life together. Helen lovingly cared for Charlie during the past several challenging years as he battled diabetes. Charlie McCurdy was an exemplary example of a good man. His memory will always bring a smile to everyone who knew him. He made the world a better place. Survived by his children; grandchildren, Avery, Kelsey, Lesley, Taylor; sister, Bobbie Meadows; niece and nephews, Laura Lavine, Hamp Kling, Dr. Bill Meadows, Robert Meadows, Greg Meadows. Graveside service was held Tuesday, Dec. 31, at Lakewood Memory Gardens with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, make a donation to your favorite charity in his name or contact
