Dr. Ed Strick land

Dr. Ed Strickland Jr. Dr. J. Ed Strickland Jr., died on Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, at St. Thomas-Rutherford Hospital at age 91, leaving behind daughters Elaine Montague and husband, Theodore, of Dallas, Texas, and Susan Brewster and husband, Don, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and son, John Edwin Strickland III, of Chattanooga; granddaughters, Ashlee Norris and husband, Kevin, of Murfreesboro, Betty Montague and Katie Montague Roberts and husband, Jason, of Dallas, Texas; great-grandchildren, Parker and Alexis Jane Norris, of Murfreesboro, Samuel Langdon Masullo, of Dallas, Texas; and a special committed friend, Marge Voorhies, of Murfreesboro. His wife of 50 years and the mother of his children, Jane W. Strickland, preceded him in death in 2007. He attended public schools, graduating from Chattanooga Central High School in 1939, won a two year scholarship to the University of Chattanooga; he earned his bachelor of science degree at Emory University in 1943 and Doctor of medicine degree at Emory University School of Medicine in 1945. After serving four years and nine months in the U.S. Naval Reserve Medical Corps, he practiced Internal Medicine in Chattanooga for a period of 43 years ending in retirement following a heart attack in 1993. Dr. Strickland served as president of the Chattanooga Chapter of the American Heart Association in 1975-1976 and as president of the Chattanooga Hamilton County Medical Society during its Centennial year 1983. Memberships included the American Medical Association, Chattanooga Hamilton County Medical Society, American Society of Internal Medicine, and lifetime memberships in the Tennessee Medical and Southern Medical Associations, and the Phi Rho Sigma Medical Fraternity. He believed in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was a member of St. Marks United Methodist Church in Murfreesboro. Graveside services will be in Forest Hills Cemetery, Chattanooga, at noon Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, conducted by Rev. Dr. Jim Clardy of Murfreesboro. There will be no visitation except at graveside.
