Catherine Griswald

Catherine Jones Griswold, 91, a lifelong resident of Chattanooga, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at Memorial Hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mae Bradford and Edgar D. Jones; husband, Raymond Griswold; son, Barry Griswold; sister, Sara Rowland; brothers, Brad Jones, Dempsy Jones and Hoyt Jones. Educated in the public schools of Chattanooga, she attended then Montreat Junior College and graduated from UTK in 1944. She served as a first lieutenant in WWII in the Army Womens Medical Specialist Corps as a hospital dietitian. Out of the Army, she served in a civilian capacity as a dietitian in General Headquarters Commissary in Tokyo, Japan, during part of the occupation of Japan by U.S. troops after that war. Back in the United States, she soon went into the field of education. She taught and served in administration in the Hamilton County and Chattanooga city systems for a total of 33 years. A lifelong Presbyterian, she was baptized and made her public confession of faith at First Presbyterian Church of Chattanooga. Then she became a charter member of Brainerd Presbyterian; later in life, a charter member of Trinity Presbyterian Church. She was active in all areas of church life, serving at various times as Childrens and Adult Sunday School teacher, Womens Circle leader and Bible teacher, and Moderator of Presbyterian Women in the local church. Also, she was an Elder, serving on the Session of the Trinity Church, being Clerk of the Session for many years. She is survived by a son, Christopher Griswold; granddaughter, Bethany Moats; grandson, David Griswold and wife, Joni; daughters-in-law, Carolyn Griswold and Nancy Griswold; niece, Cathie Smith and husband, Ray; niece, Connie Hayes; nephew, Rev. Ross Rowland and wife, Tendra; two sisters-in-law; seven great-grandchildren; many other nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews, and friends. Friends and family are invited to celebrate Catherines life today, Jan. 28, at Trinity Presbyterian Church. Visitation is scheduled at 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Dr. John Stone will conduct the service at 2 p.m. in the church. The Rev. Frank Jump will conduct the committal service at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
