Joseph T. Ray, 83, of Chattanooga, died on Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at Parkridge Hospital. Mr. Ray was born in Cherokee County, Ala., on Dec. 20, 1930; he was the son of the late James Wriley Ray and Annie Ruth Ray. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, George Bernard Ray, Albert Franklin Ray; sisters, Mary Lou Bryant and Francis Elaine Ray. A veteran of The United States Army, Mr. Ray served during the Korean War. He was the successful owner of Joes Furniture, at 45 East Main Street, which he established in 1976, and operated until his retirement in 2005. He was a member of Clifton Hills Baptist Church where he served as a deacon; Mr. Ray was also a member of The Gideons. Survivors are his wife, Betsy Smith Ray, to whom he was married in 1987; sons, G. Mark Ray and Michael T. (Melissa) Ray; stepson, Eugene Smith; grandson, Maxwell Thomas Ray; brothers, James Robert (Rose Marie) Ray, and Jimmy Leon (Diane) Ray; sisters, Willodean Ray Dooley and Shirley Lee (Gary) Roden; sister-in-law, Jeannie Ray; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 14, 2014, in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Home, Battlefield Parkway. Burial will be at Lakewood Memory Gardens.
