James Phifer


James Milton Phifer passed away at his home in Knoxville, on Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at the age of 67. Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Lula Arnold Phifer; his father, Ozean Phifer; and his daughter, Tammy Phifer. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Renie Phifer. They were married one week after they first met in Chattanooga on July 16, 1983. Jim is lovingly remembered by his son, Jeff Phifer, of Olive Branch, Miss.; daughter, Jennifer Woodward, of Knoxville; and son, Thomas Phifer, of Chattanooga. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Justin, Kayla, Jakob and Lauryn Phifer and Canon and Calder Woodward. He is also remembered by his brother, Wayne Phifer, of Iuka, Miss.; and sister, Emily Hobbs, of Iuka, Miss.; and sister, Bonita "Sissy" Alder, of Chattanooga. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Jim was born in Iuka, Miss. on Sept. 5, 1946. He enlisted in the Army and served three tours of duty in the Vietnam War. He served his country for 12 years in the Army, and received two Bronze Stars for acts of valor in Vietnam. He was a 32nd degree Master Mason and a Shriner. He spent the majority of his life in Chattanooga. In addition to serving his country for 12 years, he worked at Ace Hardware of East Ridge as a small engine mechanic for 15 years. A self-proclaimed amateur meteorologist, Jim enjoyed gardening, fishing and spending time with family and friends. The visitation will be held at Lane Funeral Home, 601 Ashland Terrace, in Chattanooga at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 4, with the memorial service to follow in the chapel. The graveside service will be held at Chattanooga National Cemetery, 1200 Bailey Ave., at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, May 5. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Disabled American Veterans at www.dav.org.
