Richard Landis

Richard "Dick" Delano Landis, 88, passed from this world on Sunday, April 27, 2014, surrounded by the love of his family and many friends. He was the son of the late Frederick and Ethel Landis. A lifelong resident of Chattanooga, a veteran of World War II, he served in the Pacific theater. Later he served with distinction in the United States Army Reserve from which he retired as a Major. His retirement from Provident Insurance Co. was preceded by his ordination as an Episcopal priest. As a "Non-stipendiary" priest, he served his Lord at Saint Marks Church in Copperhill, Tenn., Thankful Memorial and Grace Episcopal Church. He was ever mindful of the needs of others! Dick was a sculptor, a poet, a wonderful father, a friend who could be counted upon. He was a beloved husband to his soul mate, Martha "Marty" Fraker Landis. He was a man whose width and breadth cannot be measured in words, but rather in the lives of the many he helped and brought solace to. His wife read the Litany at the Time of Death as angels lifted him away from this world. Marty and Dick have known each other since they were five and six years old. Their love is a wonder of God! In addition to his wife, Dick is survived by sons Mike (Marcia) Landis, Frank (Susan) Landis, and Tom (Melissa) Landis; and daughter, Kathy (Ralph) Maddux. Marty and Dick have two grandsons, Christopher (Sarah) Landis and Jonathan Landis; and granddaughters, Marie Landis, Clair Landis, Lucy Landis, Sarah Maddux and Rachael Maddux (Joe McCormick). He is also survived by a brother-in-law, Bill Fraker and sister-in-law, Rosalie Rowland; and several nieces and nephews. His family and many friends love and miss him dearly. A memorial service to celebrate Dicks life will be held a Grace Episcopal Church in Chattanooga at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 24, 2014. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association or a favorite charity. The family would like to thank Avalon Hospice of Chattanooga and the entire staff at Morning Pointe of Hixson for their kindness and respect while caring for our dear loved one.
