Shellee Galyon feeds stale bread crumbs to some of her chickens at Creekridge Farms in Chickamauga, Ga., on Tuesday. Galyon, stepbrother Bob Swanson, and other family members run the sustainable 250-acre farm, raising chickens and cows.

Shellee Galyon entered the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga as a pre-med major with the goal of becoming a doctor. Midway through college, her dad married the widow of a dairy farmer, and the blended family moved to the farm.
