An assistant sports editor for the Chattanooga Times Free Press, Ward has covered a variety of sports for the News-Free Press and the Times Free Press since becoming a full-time staff member in 1970. He traveled the country as the University of Tennessee football beat writer University of Tennessee from 1984-1999 and also covered men's and women's college basketball. Prior to that he served as the paper's Atlanta Falcons beat writer, while also covering college football and high school sports, specializing in football, wrestling and baseball. He also spent many summer evenings and weekends covering men's and women's softball and was the paper's boxing writer for several years. Ward is a member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame (Tennessee chapter), the Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame and the Tennessee Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame. He currently covers high school sports — primarily football, wrestling and baseball — but also covers University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling.
