Soddy-Daisy baseball players Andy Wright and Dillon Clift have been going through fall workouts, and they have minimized the pressure from college recruiters when the 2015 season begins.

Octavius Matthews played just a half for North Jackson last week but still proved to be a record-setter as the Chiefs secured at least a tie for the Alabama Region 7-4A championship.

The last time Hixson High School made the state football playoffs three years running, the coach was Dan Duff.

The Signal Mountain football team seemed to forget there were four quarters. Visiting Greeneville was reminded repeatedly that there were two halves, and the Green Devils made the most of the second one in winning 31-10.

At the conclusion of Soddy-Daisy's football game tonight against Bradley Central, John Rawston intends to call it quits.

Southern Conference wrestling coaches have selected the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga as the league's 2014-15 favorite.

Storyline: After playing tough against top-ranked Brentwood Academy last week, Baylor has another rugged task in this Division II-AA East/Middle Region game.

CHICKAMAUGA, Ga. — So it's on to Columbus and the state tournament, a trip none of the current Gordon Lee players have ever missed.

Hinton McConkey played less than two full quarters Friday in North Murray's win over Coahulla Creek but the senior put up numbers most quarterbacks only dream about.

I have a question. What would the near-future TSSAA classification look like without the 1.8 multiplier slapped on private schools whose desire is to remain in the public school division?

Ooltewah and Rhea County are two of 19 unbeaten teams remaining in TSSAA football this season, but before the two Class 5A teams begin looking at a possible playoff showdown, there is still business requiring their attention.

• Baylor (5-3, 2-2) at Ensworth (6-1, 3-1), 8 • Bradley Central (2-5, 0-3) at Soddy-Daisy (4-4, 1-3) • Central (6-2, 3-2) at Hixson (6-2, 4-0)

Preston Wilkey had a clear field in front of him, but with time running out and the first down secured, Hixson's senior quarterback opted for a slide near the Red Bank 30-yard line.

Skye Wilson likely will be on the sideline tonight when Signal Mountain plays at Chattanooga Christian, but the closest the sophomore running back will be to dressing out might be his game jersey.By Ward Gossett

CHICKAMAUGA, Ga. — Gordon Lee entered a new classification with a number of new opponents, but the story continues to be the same.

TSSAA officials are interested to see what Signal Mountain and a handful of other schools across the state decide regarding their football classification for the 2015-16 and 2016-17 school years.

North Jackson had one of the long-strong program's most outstanding offensive showings Friday night, and junior quarterback Logan Walters was right in the midst of it — at least for the first half.

Soddy-Daisy quarterback Hunter Maynor may have been unsung entering the 2014 high school season, but it's unlikely that he is being overlooked.

• district/region game • Bradley Central (0-3, 2-5) at McMinn County (2-1, 2-5) • Brainerd (2-2, 2-6) at Tyner (1-2, 1-6) • Brentwood Academy (7-1, 3-1) at Baylor (5-2, 2-1)

SOUTH PITTSBURG, Tenn. — It was quite a homecoming for Wes Stone, the longtime South Pittsburg assistant coach who resigned his position and moved to Boyd-Buchanan and has since become the Buccaneers' defensive coordinator.

Storyline: The Red Raiders rake their show to Murfreesboro after a tough rivalry loss to McCallie. Baylor's offense never got going last week, and its defensive front will be tested this week against an Oakland offensive line that includes University of Tennessee commitments Kyle Oliver at TE and Jack Jones at OT.

Front-runner: McCallie (7-0, 3-0). The Blue Tornado have beat two previously unbeaten East/Middle region teams in Ensworth and Baylor.

In a tough District 5-AAA loss last Friday to McMinn County, Soddy-Daisy quarterback Hunter Maynor set a city single-game passing record by throwing for 451 yards.

In the past Dalton opponents always knew the offensive philosophy they'd face was a running game regardless of the score.

RINGGOLD, Ga. — Notre Dame scored 21 second-half points but laid claim to District 7-AA's top spot with a pair of first-half goal-line stands that set the tone and changed the complexion of a game between state-ranked opponents.

Marion County's junior varsity will, for all practical purposes, play three games in eight days.

Earlier this football season a Soddy-Daisy player was injured seriously enough that the school's athletic trainers and the first responders did not want to move him.

Storyline: The Panthers have struggled offensively and without defensive help might be winless going into the District 6-AA game.

SALE CREEK PANTHERS (0-1, 0-5) vs. MARION COUNTY WARRIORS (5-1, 2-0), 8

Based primarily on its last two wins -- over Bowling Green, Ky., and Ensworth -- McCallie has jumped into the 12th spot in the CBS MaxPreps South Region football computer rankings.

The fight for the top for Baylor and McCallie this year means more than bragging rights, the ending of streaks or simply upholding a school's honor.

Sammy Seamster, who parlayed two years of high school football into a college career at Middle Tennessee State University and the start of a career in the National Football League, will have his high school jersey number retired in a ceremony Thursday afternoon at Ooltewah High.

Although he had been in tough spots previously, Kelvin Leon found himself on one of Tennessee high school football's biggest regular-season stages Friday.

It's big-game week with a number of rivalries sprinkled in for additional flavor, and the average fan, those with loyalty to no particular school, will have his choice of good games to attend.

Bill Price has been called, in polite terms, a stubborn man, but Signal Mountain supporters would rather say their football coach is both determined in his mindset and persistent in his team's offensive attack.

McCallie snapped one big streak last week and tries tonight to snip another.

Boyd-Buchanan may not be the best 0-5 football team in the TSSAA -- Siegel probably owns that distinction -- but the Buccaneers have faced three schools larger than theirs and tonight take on their second Division II-A opponent, and an undefeated one at that.

Jason Fitzgerald is undecided on what the future might hold for Dakota Ricker.

Did you see that Tennessee high school football now has what is believed to be its first female head coach?

Brainerd had just 187 yards of offense but it was enough for the Panthers to fling their horse collar high and far.

Cleveland welcomed back runners Raekwon Bunion and T.J. Parker, and the pair frolicked Friday night. Yet it was Soddy-Daisy that chugged into the winner's circle behind a bamboo defense and a near 300-yard passing outing from quarterback Hunter Maynor.

A major goal for Davon Sherrer was put on hold a few weeks ago.

Charles Fant and his staff spent most of the Sunday and Monday last week laying out the grand scheme Notre Dame would use to attack Boyd-Buchanan’s defense.

McMinn Central continues to surprise in football, and the Chargers pulled out their second biggest win of the season Friday with a 27-26 victory over Grace Christian in Knoxville.
