1 p.m.: The Art-O-Mat, Rock City Gardens. Clark Whittington, creator of The Art-O-Mat, old cigarette machines that vend art, will be offering an artist talk as well as a workshop for the local art community.

Artists of all stripes are banding together this week in an explosion of performances, sculpture installations and art exhibitions.

Chattanooga owns an enviable reputation for its appreciation and support of the arts and the region's diverse cultural institutions. That repute can only increase with the opening of HATCH, the city's first collaborative arts and cultural showcase.

Chattanooga's newest festival, HATCH, debuts Thursday, celebrating History, Arts, Technology and Culture Happenings over an 11-day span.

Chattanooga already is well known -- and widely envied -- for its embrace of the arts and its support of the region's varied cultural institutions.

At least 19 organizations have worked together to give birth to a 10-day arts and cultural festival that will encompass some existing events and create new ones.
