Jomo and WRS-
Busy as a beaver at the call center and just now check this forum. The announcement was sudden and the DMN has a lot of coverage. However, I have yet to crack open the paper but will read it during lunch.
Given how bad his Bronies were spanked in Denton while yours truly watched in all its fanfare, I'm not completely surprised. However, it's a little more of a blimp because local media is 24 hour Jerry World. On 105.3 this morning someone asked why there were no loud Cowboy fans. Someone said because all the good seats are given away as corperate perks by lots of people wearing suits to the football games. That is true. And with all these "future" perks they're talking about at "new" stadiums, only injury attorneys will be able to afford to go.
SNL alumni with "successful" careers: Dan Aykroyd, Mike Myers, Adam Sandler (to a point), Eddie Murphy (to a point), Kevin Neeland (one show, Weeds, but is considered a popular one), Bill Murrey (up to "Lost in Translation").
Today's word is Nerd: We may talk about Marvel comics all day and may have awkward social problems brought on by autism, aspburgers, etc. But we won't cold cock you in the elevator and leave you lying there. Nor suggest taking the stairs like they did on Fox News (saw the clip on rival MSNBC) Bad form.
Stewwie, I predict Durden to be gone before the season's out. I see Austin Peay now as a moral victory before bye week and then Samford back home. Obviously not going to be 15,000 but if they do win in Clarksville, I wouldn't be surprised a solid 8,000.
50-50 Saturday. As stated on this very forum, I went up to Denton to watch the UNT Mean Green literally shut out SMU and send them Bronies to the glue factory. The atmosphere was not as "electrically" charged as SEC country but they school and the fanbase represented well. Parking was easy as a lot of the local businesses were okay with fans using their spaces. Most everyone came from campus so it wasn't that big a headache. Had to take a backroad through campus into old town Denton in order to get back on the interstate.
My hero is Will Poindexter for being the halftime cannon fodder for Russ' justifiable blow-up on Saturday. It put the EKU blow-up to shame.
Both my parents were at the game Saturday and pappa bear (who played for Jack Armstrong of Oak Ridge High School fame), saw where the offense seemed to be changing plays mid-hike. If not for Dee Virgin's pick 6 and few break-up plays, we would have been in a world of hurt. Basically by the time we got into OT, the defense was all but on "E".
So how about them...oh that's right. I can attest to the San Francisco faithful being out in full force on Sunday. I decided to have lunch at the Pecan Lodge (BBQ) in Deep Ellum and about a quarter to a third of the place was filled with red jerseys. I didn't tune in until five minutes into the first quarter as Sunday is normally grocery day in the Cook satellite household. I did tune in on 105.3 The Ticket and everytime the 49ers score you could hear loud roaring as if you think it was Romo to Whitten first down. I love what Brad Sham (voice of the Cowboys) said on my radio.
Paraphrase: "You season ticket holders are to blame for this stadium being so quiet"
Me yelling at the radio on I-635: "It's too d--- expensive! For the price of going to a game in a decent part of the stadium, I can go to Vegas for three days, get a three star room with a stripper pole and hire to high end girls, dress them up as Sailor Venus/Sailor Mars..etc. etc. etc." Meanwhile North Texas is doing great except their QB can't run. But the cheap seats were $30.00 near the end zone + free parking (would have been okay paying $10.00). Who do you think I'm supporting?
Oh, and you should have seen the look on Romo's face on the front page of the DMN. It summed it all up. Sports writers are thinking 8-8 is now a far stretch.
FINALLY, sent you some more love. The local Denton County paper does a "football preview" and were giving them away at the game. Just mailed it out to you this morning.
Stewwie- Agreed on the work ethic. I felt some of the development was stunted due to the looming issue with him and T-Rob over the whole "dueling QB" era. Now that he's undisputed, the answer now is what's holding him back from going all-out Payton on the competition? Either way, it would be stupid for the Jax State faithful to not show up in droves of 4-6,000 (pretty tall order but it's not like they're driving to New Orleans).
While FCS is not as sexy in ratings for ESPN Alpha or the Duece, you think with such high ranks for both teams ESPNU could have not broadcast it? Random thought.
Romo getting a bad rap is putting it mildly. Your big city peers at the DMN act like anything short if his head and Jerry's (mostly Jerry's) on a pike is not good enough. I agree its not fair to Jacob and if we were playing a USC or behind two touchdowns going into the halftime, I probably wouldn't have acted the way I did last Saturday (bedroom got trashed; I even had to take a small table to the dumpster because the couldn't repair it). But to me, this was almost a flashback to the dreaded UAB matchup during the Kirpatrick era with five minutes left and up by five points for the first win against and FBS team in a generation. Yeah, I remember that one vividly. -.-
I wonder how many will show up for the pep rally this afternoon? I'm over/under for 2.
Comparing Carol Burnett to Tina Fay is like comparing Miyazaki's Spirited Away with Spongebob. Carol did come along at the right time and just happen to be a highly visible bundle of energy. Tina, like a lot of current talent nowadays, started out as a writer which I'm cool with (Seth Green was writer, Conen O'Brian, Al Frankin, etc.). But the first time I saw her in a performance role was as the anchor on Saturday Night Live where I learned to hate her. She went the smarty pants insult route that at one time made me wish her husband would punch her face in. (I promise I DON'T think like that anymore bout anyone in that regard; older and wiser as it were). I've watched Carol's skits and she mostly satired stuff in general and was never snippy about it. Agree with Don Knotts. I think he would have a career if he started today but mostly as a no-name character actor doing small cameos (based on general observations of the few scripted shows on regular television in general).
::no joke; sencere:: Given your taste in music, I believe I have a book that you might be interested in. Grant you its a graphic novel. Not saying anything beyond that. I'll talk to Santa. ;)
Like you, there are a lot of niche acts that get zero airplay or creditability yet they do sell-out shows whereever they go and have a loyal following to boot. Since MTV doesn't show videos anymore and the mouth breathers at Clear Channel aren't allowed to have ANY personalities, they won't say who sings what half the time. We'll leave it at that. Looking forward to the mailbag on Friday.
Jay- Did it arrive yet? Also, any push on your show for white out 2.0?
Jay, where to begin.
Mocs: Spoke my peace directly on Wiedmer's column. I can't help but not understand that it is perfectly "okay" to root for your favorite SEC team AND the team your kids actually go to school (and pay tuition) at. Some of the excuses as to why they refuse to go floor me and of course trying to explain this to the "new" citizens in town it fruitless because they come from countries where sports is either soccer or polo involving a stuffed sheep carcus. The yankee transplants get a pass. As long as the art galleries are still humming, they're happy. I predicted the perfect storm on this very column forum and Weeds concured it. No, we're not playing Auburn or SMU at Finley, but Jax State is no tush hog either.
My fantasy over/under is 15,000. Reality I predict close to 13,000. Depending on how much "push" the local media (not counting Jeff's show) does regarding a citywide call to action.
I only pray Jacob can quit it with the Romo crap.
NFC East: Noticed a slight omission but not surprised. Given the 0-4 start of the preseason, the local sports writers down here in the 214 have been having a field day. You can read all about it Thursday or Friday...literally.
NFL: Yeah, image is everything. Concussion Lawsuits? Please. Given what they charge for tickets, PSLs, Concessions, etc. "Nine- and 10-figure lawsuits" is a nickel to them. As long as the super rich will pay any price to see and be seen at an NFL game, the league will respond with a loud "Heh" like they're James Brown (my opinion mind you).
No excuses is correct. The problem with my hometown is we have to compete directly with the SEC when compared to that other FCS school in Fargo. At the same time Tennessee is not playing Georgia or South Carolina so those in the 423 going up to Knoxville can watch the lopsided game for three quarters, get out before the traffic hits, haul (grass) down I-75 and change clothes with a couple of hours to spare hanging out at the pavilion or Chattanooga Brewery. Jax State is no tush hog and I've seen match-ups between these two teams come down to the wire. Most of you (people of Chattanooga) pay tuition to send your kids to UTC. This includes student athletic fees. Go to the games!
Spy- If I'm not mistaken, your Eagles only lost to the WolfPack (an ACC school) by one point?
Couldn't watch Vols-Utah State because Time Warner has no contract with the SEC Network (which means a block from the ESPN Online feed). Apparently I did not miss anything.
With the Mocs playing Jax State at 5:00 PM D-town time, I may end up taking the straight drive to Denton via I-35 E and check out North Texas vs. SMU (kickoff at 11:00 AM). Will fill you in on all the details the following Monday.
Good read yesterday by Hargis regarding the behind the scenes happenings up at Mt. Pleasant. Apparently Jacob took it real hard but was shocked reading this morning that the OC takes most of the blame on this. They didn't stick with what worked in the first half? What the FRUIT????
