Congratulations, Cleveland! The rest of us out here in the country fighting for sane, humane school hours are very impressed and wish you all the best. We're now a national coalition (StartSchoolLater.net), and would love Cleveland residents to post their experiences making and living with this change on our website. If you'd be kind enough to sign our petition ( http://bit.ly/tWa4dS ), we'd also be very grateful--we're asking for a minimum school start time for all children, so that it's easier for local schools to make decisions in what we now know is the best interest of the kids, and so that no community ever has to keep suffering or fighting for this the way you have.
The evidence is now overwhelming that start times after 8:30 are much better for teens (see schoolstarttime.org), but too often starting high schools later poses problems for younger kids (especially if schools work this out by starting the little ones in the dark). Right now there's a national online petition to support a limit on how early ANY school can start--which will make it easier for local schools to set hours good for all children when they figure out their schedules.
