I disagree with your statement that students of similar ideology or faith, for example, are in effect denied freedom of association. College is supposed to challenge ideas, having someone in a club that presents a different point of view is a good thing. I seriously doubt that a student with a different view would be elected to a position of leadership no many how many times they tried for it.
If the local news agencies really support Small Business Saturday wouldn't it have been helpful if someone posted a list of businesses participating in the event so people would know where to go shop?
Whoops I did not mean to step on the Big Box stores advertising toes! I guess they do not want it.
A couple of more thoughts. There are a lot of leaves blowing around this time of year and they are easily combustible just as vegetation is during the dry periods of summer. I think it is a no brainier to post signs telling people that no smoking is allowed. The effectiveness of the signs should be evaluated one year later. If they are found to not be effective they need to be replaced with signs threatening citations. Since the parks should be available to the rich and poor, the citation penalties should not be monetary but directed at public park service such as picking up liter or doing trail maintenance.
Why not keep the laws simple and just ban smoking in all the public parks? We do not need cigarette butts on the ground and healthy people do not want to breath cigarette or cigar smoke, people trying to get healthy do not need it either and most certainly, people trying to quit do not need to be exposed to it.
The signs are a good way to remind people to be courteous and not smoke.
What good is the excessive speed if it is not needed?
How about getting the price of regular internet lower so everyone can afford it?
That would be a better benefit to the whole population since we are more and more being forced to do business online by government and corporate America.
Would it not be a bigger feather in our city's cap if they could brag that every family in this area was connected to affordable internet?
We need to have the Hwy 27 widening to include extra lanes all the way to Signal Mountain Blvd. not just to the river.
When a highway passes through a high density traffic area the number of traffic lanes should never be reduced.
Et tu, Tennessee Tech?

Just another career politician. Time to retire him and let someone else live off the taxpayer that may have some fresh ideas.
