"But there also is a sense that the NCAA would love to finally tattoo Wildcats coach John Calipari, if only because they never could find his fingerprints on the wrongs that stripped UMass and Memphis of their Final Four appearances when Coach Cal directed those programs."
I think you're projecting, Mark. What makes you think the NCAA holds a grudge or thinks Calipari "got away with something" at UMass and Memphis? The NCAA dusted for his fingerprints, and finding none, cleared him of any involvement or responsibility. The NCAA didn't have to do that.
This remains an issue only with sportswriters and fans who love a controversy, who enjoy innuendo and character assassination, who feel that this sleazy slimeball of a coach deserves to be punished for something. As Mike DeCourcy recently wrote: "When it comes to Calipari, fairness and restraint generally are trumped in the media by a perceived license to drill him at any opportunity."
But that doesn't mean the NCAA is out for vengeance.
