On Mother’s Day this year, the cemetery was in terrible shape and the grass hadn’t been cut in several weeks. At that time, we requested a meeting to discuss how to make sure this doesn’t happen again. The meeting was held on July 8th at which time we were informed that there wasn’t any money available to have the grass cut again until more funds were raised. We were told that perpetual funds could not be used for this, which does not seem in keeping with the purpose of the fund. My mother and numerous others in Monteagle, (many now buried here) helped establish this perpetual fund for the upkeep of the property.
During this same meeting a committee was formed to help with fund raising and volunteer help for taking care of the property. The committee members are Debbie Shrum, Deloris Knott and Brenda Cook. Since then these three individuals have devoted much time and effort and have the cemetery looking better than it has in years. They have managed to raise enough money to contract someone to gravel the roads within the cemetery. During this time the Board of Directors offered minimal help to the committee and did not support their efforts.
Although the Board is to be commended for their past contributions we need to ensure that the operations of the Cemetery Association are carried out in a transparent fashion, including open meetings and elections with notices posted in the local paper. Supporters’ requests for information should be answered in a timely manner and the decisions of the Board should be available to interested parties. I hope that the citizens of Monteagle will will become involved and help the Board, the committee and the family members to work together to preserve this fine cemetery that we all hold dear.
