Good letter, Kate. When Bush 43 became president, we were on track to pay off the national debt in a few short years. Then he and the Republican Congress (with the acquiescence of too many Democrats) cut taxes in 2001 and 2003. We can cut spending until the cows come home, but to trim the debt we also need to raise some cash.
Good letter, Glenn Vanden Bosch. Please remember that the 90 percent rate in 1945 was the marginal rate – the rate at which the last dollar was taxed. Other dollars earned by the same individual fell into other – lower – brackets.
Jake Johnston says "the only proper function of any government is to secure individual rights".
Governments also exist to provide public goods and services: to build roads, schools, sewers; to inspect our food supply; to prevent communicable disease; to protect the vulnerable (like the elderly poor); even to regulate the number of hours truckers can drive in a day.
The individual mandate is not just a personal liberty issue. If A decides to opt-out of health insurance, B will be denied coverage, or will be forced to pay higher premiums.
Scotty, correct me if I am wrong, but wouldn't Republican plans to privatize Social Security require individuals to buy private investments like stocks and bonds?
I have lived in Red Bank since 1984, and have been ticketed twice by those cameras, and I say, "Good!" I am a better driver because of it. (Coasting through on a right turn had become a habit.) You will remember we have had fatalities at both intersections. Maybe the cameras might stop a fatality (or horrible injury) in the future. No one has the right to run a red light.
Local government can use the revenue. Let's renegotiate to get a higher percentage.

Tax surprise?
To the editor: How else can the size of the federal tax bite be measured, and compared year to year, except by the revenue/GDP ratio?
Opposing ObamaCare on principle

Paying more than their 'fair share'
Since the Free Press doesn't like to call the top income groups "rich", let's be fair and accurate, and just call them "the richest".
Red Bank leaders divided on cameras
Commissioner Pierce,
I have lived in Red Bank since 1984, and have been ticketed twice by those cameras, and I say, "Good!" I am a better driver because of it. (Coasting through on a right turn had become a habit.) Trickle Down
From Warren Buffet: “There’s class warfare, all right. But it’s my class, the rich class, that’s making war, and we’re winning.”
