of course is more than seldom that any earthquake occures at the Atlantic shores or at the east coast of USA. Many many seacables lead to New York and might suffer damage as well. Each earthquakes in the Atlantic is known to be very seldom but if very strong though it might have minor magnitudes(compare Haiti) The strength of 5.9 there is like a 6.9 magnitude quake elsewhere. The Northern Eurasian plate heads towards the SouthEast causing a spreading zone through the Northern Atlantic but the African plate heads towards SouthWest sometimes pushing the Carribean one. Same do the North and South American plates rotating around Yucatan peninsula. ( were the pyramids built there as no destruction occurs there?) If both are in movement they seem to meet or move against each other somewhere in the Atlantic or Virginia, which is known to be a minor seismic zone with magnitudes normally not higher than 4.

All people esp in the USA are waiting for the " big one" along the ring of fire. But- what came most in motion this year 2011 was rather the Eurasian plate and also the African one- usually the most quiet plate of all. I am very sure about that this has also to do with Sun activities and the retreat of the ice in the Arctic which clues normally these two largest continental plates together, The incident at the Shell oil rig in Aug 2011 was also most likely caused by a small tectonic movement (up to M 4.6) that occured in July 2011 along the Norwegian shelf, a new crack in a spreading zone. Same quakes higher than 4 ( which is much for a spreading zone) occured 4 times this year around Iceland and near to Greenland where just a huge oil ( Shell and Exxon say the greatest) reservoir was found and where all oil companies now rush in to drill first. But without prescribed downhole safety valves we will for sure have a greater petrocalypse at any time than was in the GOM, without much could be can be done about it in the arctic sea. Just a small tectonic movement is enough to rattle the wellheads and pipes to get lose from then formation and a blowout to get through. Any volcanic activity below such a crack will heat uo oil and gas to pressures no material can resist. BP however most likely drilled 13.500 meters deep ( well A/ 2010) into an old volcano in an old spreading fault of the GOM, called " florida fault"
