Unions are outdated. Allowing union activity around the VW project, its suppliers or affiliates will simply repeat history in some fashion. Unions will be the festering cancer that will kill the golden egg laying goose we fondly call VW. Little known fact: A company with union has a market value of $40,000 less PER UNION WORKER. Which means less incentive to create new jobs, expand operations or support the local community.
Once more, it is a sad day when individual worker rights are predetermined by uninvolved union leadership with a proven history of greed and exploitation.
Additionally, the hiring of local talent is not and will never be a good argument or cause for discontent. The hiring of "the most qualified" companies is the only reasonable path. Just because you are 'local' doesn't mean you have your act together or have a preeminent right to a contract.
Get your competitive advantage by being the best at what you do, NOT by who you know or where you are located. May the best one win!
What other factors, other than the economy, could be causing this under-employment? Meaning: What else causes MBA graduates to work at a job for which they are over qualified?
Could it be lack of work experience? Or a true lack of opportunities for MBA graduates in Chattanooga?
The future seems bleak for Chattanooga if an over abundance of highly skilled MBAs, trained in Chattanooga, live in Chattanooga and desire to stay in our scenic city will be required to leave because no lucrative opportunities exist.
Some of the 240 graduates at UTC will continue working in Chattanooga's larger employers. I assume a handful will find accounting positions and others may land at smaller companies. I foresee an exodus of talent from Chattanooga regarding MBA graduates. And VW probably won't require a Master's degree to be on the assembly line in 2010.
Most MBA students have work experience, so they are far from being beggars. They are, however, choosers. Hopefully, Chattanooga will have jobs to choose from that will not leave these highly skilled workers under-employed & under compensated. If you disagree...go to a job board and type
in "MBA" and "Chattanooga".
This is good news to all people of Chattanooga. This is a huge step forward to increasing competition and providing customers with alternative options. Fiber optic means "the speed of light" - something Comcast can't compete with on DSL. High Definition channels on EPB cable service will be excellent. Basic cable clarity will increase and Chattanooga will finally be a 21st century city. Let's all support our power board and community.
