This article was neither about Normal Park nor Rhonda Thurman. It was about the failure of the Hamilton County Commision and the Hamilton County School Board to provide safe and adequate facilities to students.
What was not mentioned was the fact that Sale Creek has 530 or so kids and 40 plus staff and there are only 2 bathrooms per sex. A couple of weeks ago one set of bathrooms was not working so they had to make do with just one for males and one for females. We visited another school for a middle school basketball game and my wife commented they had more stalls in one bathroom than we have in our entire school.
It also did not mention that during severe storms the entire middle school has to leave the mobile home park and go sit in the hallway of the main building as a safety precaution. Also, how about an art class with no running water?
As for the other poster in regards to athletic facilities. I can only say I wish we had some to complain about. We have a middle school football team now, but we have no field or even a locker room. The one gym is shared by 4 basketball teams plus JV and two volleyball teams. If you want to wrestle, head to the cafeteria. They fold up the tables, roll out the mats and practice on the cafeteria floor. Soccer? Hop in your car and drive to Hixson High School every afternoon for that opportunity.
With all of that said, the students are performing remarkably well. Test scores are high. There was over $500K in scholarships earned by last year's graduating class of 50 or so kids. I have a junior who has been earning college credit in dual enrollment classes since the 10th grade. This is a high performing school. It is time our elected leaders recognize this and reward not only these students, but the entire community with some long overdue reinvestment of their tax dollars here.
