Ms. O'day is a political appointed commissioner from Knoxville. Her experince is social work in the private sector, none in Juvinile Justice. It has been reported that she is being given misinformation from within her department. With the facts she has stated in this artrical this may be correct. She says Taft operates with a 1932 era boiler. In fact the boilers the facility uses are new and are powered by natural gas. The dormitories were renovated in 1982. The security complex and acadimic/counseling center are new construction 2003. She has definatley made her decision on misinformation, whether it has come from within the department or not I don't know. It makes you wonder if your in the business of helping kids, why close the best you've got?

My heart goes out to the childrens family. This is one of the most tragic crimes I've seen in some time. In a time of peace on earth and good will. What is happening in our cities? This is heartbreaking. It will be interesting to see DCS's responce. What was this man and woman's record? Say a prayer for this family!!!!
Pikeville you need to read the comment by Smokey about 100 down the list. Then find the article in TFPress Front Page Friday Dec 23 2011 named Haslam's "top to bottom" review of operations.
He even said the 90 JD's would be moved to the 4 other facilities which are at only 80% capacity.
Pikeville maybe the Governor and O'Day are looking at more of the BIGGER picture than you realize. They did say that the jobs at Pikeville could be available at the NEW prision. So they are also looking out for "PEOPLE" like you.
Now what will YOU say to the people at the "other JD" that you say would be better to close. Tough LUCK you lost your job an have no place to go in this HIGH umemployment time.
I do not care which one is closed as far as reducing costs as a TAXpayer but increasing the unemployment in the STATE will effect us all.
I live in a TN county that spends $75,000 per DAY that is over $27 million a YEAR just to "house the county prisioners". In Chattanooga TN they call it the "Bed and Breakfast Motel" MY county property taxes pay for this WASTE. Our politicans should OUTSOURCE our three time loser JAIL BIRDS to China then watch the crime rate drop.

No where, repeat, No where in this article or in any of the comments posted so far state anything about the race of the victims or the perps. Are you trying to influence people by inventing sentences between quotes that you invented? You loose a lot of credibility when you do that.
