COFFEEVILLE, Ala. (AP) - A boat sunk in a lock on the Tombigbee River in southwest Alabama, temporarily blocking the passage until crews can remove it.
WKRG-TV reported that Coffeeville Lock and Dam has been closed since the mishap on Saturday, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers hopes to have it operating again by the weekend.
The lock is located about 90 miles (145 kilometers) north of Mobile Bay but south of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, which links the Tennessee River with the Tombigbee through Alabama and Mississippi.
Lock supervisor Robert Cox said a 41-foot boat which left Dauphin Island headed north with one person aboard went down.
"As the vessel was being lifted to the upstream side the vessel starting listing and then as it was listing to the port side it then rolled over and immediately sunk," Cox said.
Divers and a barge will help remove the boat, which is in water about 50 feet (15 meters) deep, he said.
