UGA's Mettenberger charged with underage possession

Georgia redshirt freshman quarterback Zach Mettenberger was charged with underage possession of alcohol and two counts of disorderly conduct following an arrest early Sunday morning at Flip Flops bar in Remerton, Ga. The 18-year-old also was charged with two counts of possessing false identification.

Sports information department officials at Georgia could not provide any immediate reaction Monday from coach Mark Richt, because they were on furlough. The university is on spring break, and the football team will not resume spring practice until March 16.

Mettenberger is competing with Logan Gray and Aaron Murray for the starting job.

Under Georgia athletic association policy, players with alcohol-related charges are suspended for 10 percent of the upcoming season. The Bulldogs open Sept. 4 against Louisiana-Lafayette before traveling to South Carolina on Sept. 11.
