Murray, Mettenberger sharp in UGA scrimmage

Richt says all three Bulldogs quarterback candidates are continuing to compete well.

Another spring scrimmage at Georgia. Another solid performance by redshirt freshman quarterback Aaron Murray.

According to statistics provided by coach Mark Richt, Murray completed 10 of 15 passes for 125 yards in Saturday morning's closed scrimmage and had a 40-yard touchdown pass to A.J. Green. Fellow redshirt freshman Zach Mettenberger completed 7 of 10 passes for 157 yards, highlighted by a 65-yard scoring strike to Rantavious Wooten, while junior Logan Gray was 6 of 14 for 37 yards.

Saturday marked the fourth spring scrimmage in Murray's career with the Bulldogs and the fourth time in which he's completed more than 50 percent of his passes.

"If you're trying to get where we're going, I don't know where we're going yet," Richt said of the quarterback race. "They're all competing and doing a good job."

Mettenberger was horrific in the three spring scrimmages last year, going 2-of-18 for 43 yards with two interceptions, but he was the lone quarterback who avoided an interception Saturday. Murray and Gray each got picked off once.

Caleb King had six carries for 79 yards and Washaun Ealey rushed nine times for 64 yards in a productive day by the tailbacks.

"Overall, I was pretty pleased," Richt said. "It was very competitive. Guys were playing fast, and there were some nice plays made and very few balls dropped and very few penalties. We did have a couple missed tackles and assignments, but overall I think it was a good day."

Saturday's 90-minute scrimmage inside Sanford Stadium was a split decision, Richt said, with the defense winning the first half and the offense winning the second. Middle linebacker Akeem Dent had six tackles and a tackle for loss, while safety Bacarri Rambo had five tackles and an interception and safety Shawn Williams a 30-yard interception return for a touchdown.

The Bulldogs were playing in the 3-4 defensive scheme being implemented by new coordinator Todd Grantham.

"We did a decent job today," Dent said. "I wouldn't say it was good or great. I feel like we were a little more conservative today because we wanted to get everyone in the scheme and everyone in the flow of things."

Wooten had a successful freshman season last year, earning three starts and compiling 10 receptions for 197 yards and two touchdowns. He almost matched that Saturday, making six catches for 146 yards as a second-team receiver going against the second-team defense.

Richt admitted Wooten had been plagued by dropped passes this month until Saturday.

"The spring hadn't started out too well for me," Wooten said. "I had to show them today that I can make plays."

Sophomore tackle A.J. Harmon injured his leg during the scrimmage, but Richt did not know of any other setbacks. The Bulldogs will resume spring workouts Tuesday, which will be their ninth of the 15 allotted by the NCAA, and will scrimmage for a second time on Saturday.
