District 9 Councilman Peter Murphy, who lost a re-election bid March 5, is asking the Hamilton County Election Commission to hold a runoff election.

He gave the commission until 5 p.m. Tuesday to say it will have a runoff or he will consider pursuing legal action.

Murphy lost his seat last week when the Hamilton County Election Commission ruled former Councilman Yusuf Hakeem the winner of the March 5 city election. Hakeem won by seven votes.

But Murphy, who has been the councilman for the district over the last four years, contends there should be a runoff due to ballots cast. The election commission threw out several provisional ballots because it said they were not legitimate ballots under state law.
