Littlefield backs Wamp for mayor

As a confirmed political independent with friends and close associates from both major parties, I generally enjoy staying out of the political fray these days. However, this seems like a good time to speak up.

The election of the next Hamilton County mayor is bigger than party label and more important than a new baseball stadium; it's about the future of our entire community.

I have known Weston Wamp since he was born - and his parents and grandparents for decades before. They are good people. Weston has the credibility, the intelligence, the energy and the enthusiasm to do the right thing.

I do not believe the scurrilous claims by political opponents in these closing days of a campaign. Those of us in politics are familiar with such dishonest tactics. Fortunately, they often fail.

I have already voted for Weston and proudly recommend that all those who hope for a better future for everyone should do the same.

District 6 should pick Ruth Jeno

Hamilton County District 6 voters have for themselves an outstanding choice as their representative on the Hamilton County Commission.

I have had the privilege of serving on the Red Bank City Commission as well as other community groups with Ruth Jeno.

I have sat across the table with Ruth as we worked through city budgets, zoning ordinances, design standards and many other sometimes high-intensity matters. Ruth always impressed me with her willingness to hear all thoughts and opinions of others while still having a firm hold on her own thoughts on the matters at hand.

Ruth always keeps a humble demeanor and open mind with a good dose of common sense when weighing her decisions.

I am painting a stellar picture of Ruth Jeno because that is what she is. Time is a proven indicator of truth and value. Ruth's time as a public servant has proven her as the outstanding choice.

Is DA candidate Brooks a veteran?

Over the past several weeks, a candidate for district attorney general of Hamilton County has touted himself as being a veteran. According to what I've learned, I don't think he qualifies to call himself that.

It bothers me if he is not a veteran because I lost a brother almost two years ago to the effects of Agent Orange, and I don't want his or any other veteran's service to be diminished.

John Allen Brooks, please furnish this paper a copy of your DD214. If you are a veteran, I will apologize profusely.

I'm voting for the most qualified person in the race, Coty Wamp. However, there may be plenty of Democratic veterans who will also vote for her if you ignore them and won't prove yourself. Honesty is the best policy, right?

SROs not be all, end all for safety

I received one of the cards from the state Republican Party about the local race for county commission in District 6. It suggested David Sharpe was endangering Hamilton County School students by suggesting options to SROs.

Here is an article from JAMA (tinyurl.com/fzv3j5rc), where this was studied:

In comparing shootings with an SRO present with those where none was present, the number of deaths was almost three times greater with an armed guard present. So perhaps having an armed guard present isn't the best solution? $3.2 million dollars would buy a boat-load of school psychologists.

Back to the partisan part. I don't know if David Sharpe's opponent was aware of the move by the state Republican Party or not, but the mantra of "good guy with a gun" is now around his opponent's neck. So if Mr Sharpe should lose, his opponent cannot be persuaded by reason on the decision for SROs as the party has made that decision. Local races should be local.
