Two suburban areas in Hamilton County are among the most affordable areas for homeowners in Tennessee, according to a new study by the personal finance website SmartAsset.
Middle Valley and Harrison are among the top 10 census areas in the Volunteer State for affordability, comparing the median income in the area with the housing costs in that area. SmartAsset analyzed closing costs, real estate taxes, homeowner insurance and mortgage rates in each area, and the five-year cost was then measured as a portion of the median household income in each area to develop the ranking. Across Tennessee, the most affordable areas are:
1. Oakland, a Memphis suburb in West Tennessee
2. Henderson, near Jackson in West Tennessee
3. Atoka, a Memphis suburb in West Tennessee
4. LaFollette, in East Tennessee
5. Milan, in Gibson County in West Tennessee
6. Middle Valley, in north Hamilton County near Soddy-Daisy
7. Bloomingdale, a Kingsport suburb in upper East Tennessee
8. Church Hill, in upper East Tennessee
9. Bartlett, a Memphis suburb in West Tennessee
10. Harrison, in northeastern Hamilton County
