Times opinion intro 12/27/21

'Tis the season

I hope you had a wonderful - if slightly bittersweet - Christmas. All through the weekend, I kept hearing in my head these song lyrics from "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas:"

Someday soon we all will be together

If the fates allow

Until then we'll have to muddle through somehow

So have yourself a merry little Christmas now.

The song was written in 1943 in another dark time in our history as World War II plodded along. Now COVID-19 and its newest super-contagious variant Omicron is dampening our holidays.

There also was the sad farce of West Virginia's Sen. Joe Manchin, who strung the country along with another political lie that he would help pass the Build Back Better legislation. Last week he went on Fox TV to say, Nah. Not doing it.

That's OK. We will overcome, and this mean 2021 year is almost over. Let New York Times columnist Gail Collins make you smile with her fun quiz on 2021's "intriguing" moments.
