UPDATE: Following further investigation, the Chattanooga Police Department made an arrest in connection to Sunday's homicide at the 1000 block of Baldwin Street.

Jamaal Mayes, 34, is charged with criminal homicide and possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony.

"I'm very proud of the CPD Officers and Investigators who quickly located and arrested the suspect in this case," CPD Chief David Roddy, said. "I also want to acknowledge and thank the community members who contacted officers with information that ultimately led to the arrest of Jamaal Mayes. Our city will be a safer place when we all work together."

It was not yet clear where the shooting took place or if it was self-inflicted. It was also not yet known if the man was homeless.

At 8:15 p.m., crime scene tape encircled a small section of Passenger Street - formerly known as Baldwin Street - between East 10th and East 11th streets.

A body covered with a white sheet could be seen on the side walk as police walked the perimeter with flashlights looking for any evidence.

Children were playing in an apartment building's courtyard just on the other side of the crime scene.
