A former Marion County, Tennessee, sheriff was killed in a car crash along Highway 28 in Jasper on Thursday afternoon, current Sheriff Bo Burnett said.
Former Sheriff Lloyd Hood was riding in the passenger seat of a pickup truck when it was hit from behind and flipped.
James Layne, the driver of the truck Hood was riding in, was critically injured and airlifted to a local hospital, Burnett said. He remains in critical condition.
Burnett said the driver of the other vehicle was a female, but he didn't have much additional information, as the Jasper Police Department and Tennessee Highway Patrol are the investigating agencies.
Hood was sheriff of Marion County from 1974 to 1986.
