Shernard Stewart Jr. confronted Willie Edwards about breaking into an outbuilding before he shot him in the 2000 block of Museum Street Friday night, witnesses told investigators.

Witnesses said Stewart, 22, kept his personal belongings in the outbuilding, according to court records. He often slept there, too.

Police found Edwards lying in the front yard of a home with a gunshot wound to the abdomen, court records show. He was taken to a local hospital and was listed in critical condition and rushed into surgery.

Investigators were told that Edwards did not have a weapon in his hand when Stewart shot him.

Stewart admitted to shooting Edwards "because [Edwards] charged at him," court records state.

Stewart is charged with attempted murder and was being held in the Hamilton County Jail on a $75,000 bond.
