Volkswagen is recalling 8,416 Atlas SUVs and Passat sedans because brake caliper bracket mounting bolts on these vehicles may not have been tightened sufficiently, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Volkswagen plans to notify owners of the 2018 Atlas and 2017-18 Passat models, and dealers will inspect the brake caliper bracket bolt tightness, replacing and re-torque the bolts as necessary, free of charge, the agency said.

Also, brake caliper fasteners, bleeder valve, and brake hose bolts will be checked and torqued to the correct specification, if necessary. For Passat vehicles, dealers will also inspect the parking brake cable for proper connection, also free of charge.

The recall on the Chattanooga-made vehicles is expected to begin Oct. 14. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298.
