Two burglary suspects who broke into a duplex through the ceiling were caught Tuesday by East Ridge police and Catoosa County deputies, authorities said.
The incident began when the suspects' vehicle was spotted in the 1600 block of Waterhouse Street and saw someone standing in the doorway of the duplex, according to Assistant Chief Stan Allen with the East Ridge Police Department.
The officers ordered the person to step out, but instead he shut and locked the door. Meanwhile, officers saw a second man running out the back door of the neighboring duplex. Police gave chase and took Christopher Lee Nation into custody after a brief struggle, Allen said
Then they found the first suspect, Daniel Coates, hiding in the attic. Officers figured out the men broke through a ceiling tile and climbed into the attic, then pushed through to the next-door unit.
Officers found suspected methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia on Nations, who Allen said has an extensive criminal record of thefts and burglaries in Chattanooga and North Georgia.
He said police in local jurisdictions are still investigating possible to connections to other crimes. Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of any stolen property associated with either subject is encouraged to contact law enforcement.
